The purpose of this website is to make available the writings of Walter Zander, who was born in Germany in 1898 and who died in London in 1993 aged 94. His writings fall into several distinct categories.

In the 1920s and early 1930s he wrote on law and on economics, mainly in the sphere of monetary reform. Those writings, which were originally in German, are represented here by several that were at the time translated and published also in English.

In the 1940s, after emigrating from Germany to Britain, and having experienced internment by the British as an Enemy Alien, he wrote on aspects of 'the Jewish question', including the relationship of Jews and Christians. In 1947 he published SOVIET JEWRY, PALESTINE AND THE WEST. In the post-war period he wrote a number of articles about Israel in regard to various aspects of international relations.

The third tranche of his writings concerned the Holy Places - and especially the Christian Holy Places - in Jerusalem. They include his book ISRAEL AND THE HOLY PLACES OF CHRISTENDOM (1971) and two lengthy articles in The Israel Law Review - 'On the Settlement of Disputes about the Christian Holy Places' (1973) and 'Jurisdiction and Holiness: Reflections on the Coptic-Ethiopian Case' (1982). Probably his best known publication was the pamphlet IS THIS THE WAY? A CALL TO JEWS published in 1948 shortly before the establishment of the State of Israel in which he urged that the attitude of the Jews toward the Arabs was morally as well as politically wrong. (Over fifty years later, in 2001 The Jewish Quarterly published four pages of extracts from what it called 'this extraordinarily prophetic pamphlet'.)

The website includes all his publications other than those on monetary issues and economics that are not available in English translation. There is also a complete bibliography.

The website includes a brief biographical note written for the funeral, a memorial essay by the writer and obituaries published in The Times, The Guardian, The Daily Telegraph, The Independent and The Jewish Chronicle.
